A Letter to My Colleagues in Mental Health
I wanted to make a video about why I do Collaborative Divorce, specifically for my colleagues in mental health. If you’re considering taking the training in Collaborative Divorce - read on!
Being a counselor was always a "near fit" for me.
I'm pretty assertive.
I'm pretty solution focused.
I'm pretty goal oriented.
I know some counselors are all these things as well. However, I'm also SUPER passionate about families going through transitions well.
After a decade of working with families on the other side of divorce,
- trying to fix the damage that divorce did
- trying to help mend relationships between parents and children
I knew there had to be a better way. That led me to Collaborative Divorce.
Collaborative is a way for a professional team to lead a family through the steps of disentangling their marriage WITHOUT tearing each other to shreds in the process.
It involves:
- two attorneys - one per spouse, who function as the legal technicians, helping us all color within the lines of what the law will allow,
- a divorce coach (mental health professional), to help everyone stay in their frontal lobe, keep everyone engaged, educate about parenting, how emotions impact decision making, basically keep us on the rails.
- a financial neutral to educate and guide the couple toward a decision that will work specifically for them, taking into consideration their financial goals, tax implications for them, current debts and assets, etc.
Here's why I love it.
We work TOGETHER.
As a team.
This business is full of professionals who share values around: empowering families to be kind. To work through these decisions themselves. To extend grace, to give each other the benefit of the doubt.
Professionally, I have not only found my stride, but I feel like I've also found my tribe.
